Connecting to the Internet

Faculty and Staff

Computers are connected to the internet for you upon installation by the IT Help Desk. If you are having problems with your internet connection, please contact the IT Help Desk.

Students

Internet connectivity is provided for you in your residence halls through ResNet. Simple instructions for connecting to ResNet are as follows:

  1. Connect your computer to the Ethernet drop on the wall of your dorm room. Windows 98/ME users: if you need extra instructions to setup your computer to work with Ethernet, follow these instructions from the IT Help Desk. (NOTE: most users should not have to follow these directions).
  2. Launch your web browser and navigate to http://register.resnet.emich.edu. Follow the instructions provided on screen. Complete the form and when asked to, restart the computer.
  3. When your computer starts up, it will join ResNet, and you will be able to browse the Internet.

Dial-up users

All students, faculty, and staff of Eastern Michigan University are provided dial-up accounts to the internet at no additional charge. Instructions for connecting to the internet with a dial-up modem can be found at the IT Help Desk. The instructions are along the right column of the main page of the IT Help Desk.

Wireless Networking

Wireless Networking is available at a growing number of locations throughout the main campus. To access the wireless network you will need the following:

  • Windows XP or Macintosh OSX
  • Wireless Access card that supports the 802.11b or 802.11g wireless standards
  • Appropriate drivers
  • A valid my.emich username and password
  • Location with wireless access available

If you have the required hardware and are in a service area, simply open your web browser and you will be prompted for your my.emich username and password. Once you supply this information, you will be allowed to connect to EMU resources and the internet.
