Staff Organization
The Division of Information Technology (IT) is led by the Chief Information Officer, Dr. Carl Powell. DoIT collaborates with other divisions and units to provide comprehensive information technology support, systems, services, and planning across EMU's campus. DoIT is staffed by 130 full-time and student employees.
User Services Group
The User Services Group is primarily responsible for providing high-value support to users of the University's centralized IT services. Lead by Senior Director Ron Woody, the User Services Group includes the following departments.
Enterprise Support (Help Desk)
The Help Desk provides walk-up help in addition to help by phone or email requests for computer users at Eastern Michigan University. The Help Desk has the latest virus information and antivirus software updates online.
Instructional Technology
Faculty, staff and currently enrolled students have access to training through IT Training Workshops. Staff and faculty can acquire additional skills to manage computer tasks using Banner and other EMU systems.
Business Operations
Provides senior project management and coordination to large, complex, and/or cross-institutional projects. Provides management and coordination of the IT Policy process. Provides fiscal planning services as required.
IT Computer Labs
Located in the Halle library, Student Center, Pray-Harrold and COB Owen buildings, have computer hardware and software to help all members of the campus community work on their latest projects.
Enterprise Systems Group
The Enterprise Systems Group is primarily responsible for the University's centralized network and computing systems, software applications, and data center operations. Lead by Senior Director Bob Goffeney, the Enterprise Systems Group includes the following departments:
Systems Integration and Maintenance
The Systems team is responsible for maintaining the systems that host core administrative and academic technology services. The team is primarily focused on Unix based and Novell based host systems.
Application Administration Services
The AAS team provides upgrades, troubleshooting, application monitoring, and customer support services for a select group of applications such as Business Objects Enterprise (BOE), AppWorx, Evisions, and JIRA.
Network Systems Engineering
Network Engineering is responsible for the planning, implementation, administration, and maintenance of the EMU enterprise data network. The team is currently working through the third year of a four year project to upgrade and standardize the enterprise network.
IT Security
Provide leadership, oversight, and development for security policy, processes, standards, guidelines and training to maintain and safeguard the integrity of EMU's information resources through cost efficient, creative and progressive security concepts.
Application and Process Services
The APS Team provides primary production support for the Banner ERP system, participates in the Banner upgrade testing and implementation process, develops Banner enhancements and add-on capabilities, and creates interfaces between Banner and other internal and external systems.
Portal Support Services
This team supports the Banner Workflow and Xtender document imaging environments. This team also provides system administration and development services for the Luminis Portal, the Banner Web4 self service functions, and the IT website.
Enterprise Data Center Operations
Data Center Operations team is responsible for the day-to-day operation of data center equipment, system, and services. Among the team's responsibilities are managing Banner job chains, data center printing, physical data center security, and all tape backups for core systems.
Database Services
This team provides "backroom" technical services related to our Oracle databases. These services include database clones and backups, consulting services to other IT Teams, Banner upgrade and patch research and implementation, and server and database performance monitoring and tuning.
